Metro Open Houses on Natural Areas Print E-mail
Written by Bruce Bartlett
Thursday, 10 May 2007

In June, residents of the region are invited to attend any of eight open houses and a virtual open house to learn more about the specific areas Metro plans to purchase with funds from its 2006 natural areas bond measure (see message above). Councilors and Metro staff will review plans and seek input. At press time, these meetings are planned, but may be subject to change. To confirm meeting information and see a full list of meetings during which the 27 target areas will be discussed, visit www.metro-region.org/naturalareas.

The Hippies Were Right!

Green homes? Organic food? Nature is good? Time to give the ol' tie-dyers some respect

Go ahead, name your movement. Name something good and positive and pro-environment and eco-friendly that's happening right now in the newly "greening" America and don't say more guns in Texas or fewer reproductive choices for women or endless vile unwinnable BushCo wars in the Middle East lasting until roughly 2075 because that would defeat the whole point of this perky little column and destroy its naive tone of happy rose-colored sardonic optimism. OK?

Pirate Ship Play Park Print E-mail
Written by Bruce Bartlett
Monday, 23 April 2007
Pirate Ship Play Park is located south of an unnamed tributary of Rock Creek in Bethany.  This tributary flows in a southwesterly direction from north of Stoller Middle School, crossing Kaiser Rd. north of its intersection with Bethany Blvd and West Union and crossing West Union to the south between the Albertson's grocery at 185th and West Union and the Deerfield subdivision.  The park is accessible from trail heads at Kaiser Rd., at West Union, at Laidlaw Road or at Graf Street.
There is uncertainty whether the park is officially in the Morgan Run Park or whether it is considered to be in Bethany Meadows. There is not a parking lot associated with the park and you will need to walk in.   The easiest access is probably from Graf Street--park near the powerline corridor and cross the creek using the pedestrian bridge--but I have never walked in using this access.  To use the Laidlaw Road access--park on Laidlaw at the powerline corridor (there is a THPRD park sign identifying this as Morgan Run Park) and follow the pathway in Morgan Run north. Parking on either West Union or Kaiser would not be advised.
